Hemel Hempstead is the main town in the attractive rural borough of Dacorum that covers 81 square miles of west Hertfordshire. The town is just north of London and has excellent transport links, with the M1 and M25 on its doorstep, and rail time to Euston just 26 minutes door to door. Luton, Heathrow and Stansted airports are only short drives away.


The main bus services cover both urban and rural destinations within the borough, allowing easy access throughout Dacorum. The largest operator is Arriva, with other regular services from Centrebus, Mullanys, Red Rose and Carousel. All bus journey planning, including live departures/timetables in a smartphone or tablet friendly format, can be done at Intalink. There, you will also find great value ticket options such as the PlusBus add-on to rail tickets and Explorer multi-operator tickets for up to four people travelling together by bus. 

National Express and Green Line express services cover destinations outside of the Borough including London, Oxford, Cambridge, Northampton and Heathrow or Stansted airports. This enables simplicity for visitors coming to Dacorum, as well as stress-free excursions away.

Furthermore, Dacorum boasts numerous electric vehicle charging points, via the Source East public charging network.


Dacorum is connected to much of the rest of the country through five main train stations - Kings Langley, Apsley, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring.

The London Midland train service travels southbound to London Euston in approximately 30 minutes on a very regular basis. Journeys northbound travel to Birmingham New Street in 90 minutes, where a change opens up the rest of the Midlands and the North.

Other service lines include Southern Trains which run through Clapham and onwards, with Brighton under two hours away.

Dacorum's strong connectivity via rail allows for easy travelling and opportunities for frequent adventures.


A number of airports are within easy reach for Dacorum. London Luton is extremely close via the M1, as well as London Heathrow can be reached via the A41 and M25. Both of these airports are easily accessed via public trainsport. 

London Gatwick and London Stansted are also accessible further afield.

Walking and Cycling

Dacorum boasts a number of routes suitable for leisure and/or commuting, including the car-free Nickey Line (part of National Cycle Network Route 57), the Grand Union Canal towpath and the Chiltern trails with entrance points around Berkhamsted and Tring. The borough is aspiring to be a cycle friendly area and has successfully welcomed stages of the Men’s and Women’s professional cycling Tours in recent years.
